Recently, I was invited to the COS Spring Summer 2017 Press Day at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Dublin and the new collection is everything that you would expect from COS – beautiful finishes, subtle detailing and an elegant, structured aesthetic.
For SS17 COS is staying close to its roots of beautifully tailored, minimalist pieces. What I found different about this collection is the colour palette. There are no surprising pops of colours – it is a neutral, tonal and quite soft palette and I find that calming as it feels earthy. The colours were inspired by James Turrell’s work ‘Within, Without’ (read more here). The neutral colours are slightly contrasted with accents of steel blue and also a green sage tone that is a nod towards natural versus industrial and adds another depth to the collection.
The fabrics and textiles used throughout the collection feel industrial and yet on another level they feel effortless. I love the utility inspired structure and the silhouette created by many of the individual pieces. There are both technical and natural fabrics and often the pieces feel light and yet romantic. The origami-like folds on some of the pieces are beautiful. There is something sensual about the women’s collection that makes you want to touch and feel it. And much of the collection could be worn well past the Spring and Summer seasons.
I feel also a small note needs to be mentioned on the accessories in the collection. They have beautiful gold plated amorphic earring and necklace pieces. They feel understated and yet elegant. And they also have some beautiful bags coming out in this collection. The one that stood out to me was a rubberised leather folded shoulder bag in dark sage, which just looked unique but also classic. There is also a rubberised leather backpack with a velcro fastening that I will definitely be buying for himself!
The standout piece for me in the whole collection was the grey skirt below. I adore the waist detailing and the colour is soft and perfect for Sping/Summer. To be it appears like a reinvented classic apron! The official name of the skirt is ‘Cotton pencil skirt with folded wrap waist in light stone melange‘, and this is one that I will be running to buy as I think it will be such a statement especially if the structural aspect is left on show with a plain tee or slightly tighter top tucked in.
Thank you so much to COS for having me – I adore their clothing so seeing this collection was amazing. You can shop COS online by clicking here and they currently deliver to the US and 18 EU markets!
