I adore Phoebe English’s take on menswear. And her SS19 collection was as I had hoped, geometric and utilitarian in nature, with a palette of orange, grey, dust pink, black and, white. It is the tailoring in her pieces that I admire, and the way that the fabrics drop and move when someone is wearing them.
Womenswear, in parts, is made from unused menswear material. Menswear remains utilitarian womenswear remains imaginative and narrative based. Take either, to wear, as you wish. – Phoebe English {via}
My personal favourite of the collection was the black tulle pieces with the polka dots. The polka dots add such a fun element to her collection and look like they are about to jump off the garments.
This Fashion Week she showed both menswear and womenswear and it was impressive. She did keep them separate to a degree with only showing one or the other at the one time. The entire collection was cohesive and managed to be very fluid and slightly merge the genders of the pieces which was so interesting to see.
For those not familiar with the brand, Phoebe English is a label that was founded by Phoebe in 2011. Her pieces are created entirely in England; from initial sketch to final stitch. She is certainly far removed from mass production which is fantastic and it is the close attention to detail and precision in the pieces that she creates that really sets her apart. The label offers both a range of both accessible, wearable designs alongside Phoebe’s signature labour-intensive textile pieces.
With regards to her background, she trained at Central Saint Martins where she completed both a BA and MA in Fashion. On graduation, she was awarded the L’Oreal Professional Prize, Ungaro Bursary and Chloe Award. She has worked across a wide variety of disciplines and organisations and regularly guest lectures in leading Universities.
