There are no ”experts” at a Death Café, therefore no guest speakers etc. Our Death Cafés are always offered: – On a not for profit basis – In an accessible, respectful and confidential space – With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action – Alongside refreshing drinks and nourishing food – and cake! The evening will be gently guided & facilitated by Eric Van Lente. Eric enjoys creating spaces in which people can explore their thoughts, feelings & experiences in relation to challenging and emotional topics such as death. Eric has been working as a researcher in the social sciences and health for many years and is currently doing a PhD in psychology on mindfulness and the experience of oneness/non-dual awareness (‘being at one with everything’.)

This is his first full show and depicts Galway pubs, music and people, the beautiful hookers (turf boats) of Galway and some of Kinvara’s iconic places and people. “I think it was my mother who first suggested I should paint pub scenes and my father who actively encouraged it. It was certainly from my mother that I got the artistic gene. I was always keen to return home to Galway. Delighted to be living back here again! If it weren’t for the seagulls I’d give it a nine.” The exhibition will be opened by dancer, actor, singer and Kinvara native Stephanie Dufresne at 7pm, Thursday 9 August with music by Phillip Lonergan and will run throughout the month. Music Event – Cloud Castle Lake
- Location – Róisín Dubh, 9 Dominick Street Upper, Galway
- Time: 21:00
- Cost: Free
- Details: Not every new band has to burst out from a bustling scene to be legitimized. In fact, often it’s the artists who exist completely within their own realm that become the most compelling talents. Dublin-based four piece Cloud Castle Lake may make beguiling, complicated and bold compositions, but theirs is a breed of experimentation totally individual to their own searching experience, and they share a common ambition to push the lens of live performance wider, to go outside the constrictions set by genre names, and to explore beyond traditional sonic structures, offering listeners a challenging, immersive escape from the world outside. When lead vocalist, synth player and lyricist Daniel McAuley (27) met bassist Rory O’Connor (27) and guitarist/pianist Brendan William Jenkinson (27) in boarding school as a young teenager, he didn’t have any musical tendencies. He didn’t even realise he could sing, and has only recently taken vocal lessons. For a guy who has a falsetto that seems higher than Thom Yorke and Wild Beast’s Hayden Thorpe combined, that information comes as quite a shock.

At Cruinniú na mBád you can see the mighty hookers in action once again as they parade around the bay. There are lots of other types of craft sailing and competing with each other and another highlight of Cruinniú na mBád is the Climin. A Climín is a ‘raft’ made from seaweed blocked and tied for transportation to a collection point on the shore. Seaweed harvesting was once a thriving industry along the west coast of Ireland, including Kinvara.

Crossfit Event – Battle of the West 2018
- Location – CrossFit Galway, Oranmore Business Park, Galway
- Time: 08:00–17:00
- Cost: Not noted
- Details: CrossFit Galway are delighted to announce the return of Battle of the West – the hugely popular beginners competition, which will take place on Saturday 11th August 2018. This is a 1 day INDIVIDUAL event for beginner athletes, with a capacity for 35 male and 35 female athletes. This competition will be a test of fitness, skill and strength for BEGINNERS, using some of the more basic movements used in CrossFit. This will be similar to a scaled competition, but with lower weight standards, no max effort lifts, and no Olympic Lifting (apart from the final where a power clean MAY be used). This competition will suit a first or second time competitor (providing they haven’t placed in the top 10 in a previous competition). This is NOT suitable for a first time competitor with an athletic background. Our main aim is to keep all competitors at a similar level, so if you are fairly new to CrossFit but advancing quite quickly, then you will not need a beginners competition starting out. If you are eager to compete for the first time, but struggling with the weight standards set for scaled competitions, then this is a great starting point. There will be 3 WODs, with the top competitors making it to the final for a 4th WOD. This promises to be a unique and fun event and one not to be missed. Places will sell out so book early to avoid disappointment.
