  • Details: “What should I do?” That’s the question Merrill Garbus asks herself halfway through “ABC 123,” the stunning centrepiece of the new Tune-Yards album, I can feel you creep into my private life.  The new album is an unflinching examination of modern identity, intricately rendered in the manically infectious way that only Tune-Yards can. Drawing on a recent foray into DJing and inspired in part by C.L.A.W. (Collaborative Legions of Artful Women), her radio show highlighting female-identifying producers, I can feel you creep into my private life finds the band flirting with the dancefloor more than ever before, as four on the floor kick drum underpins wild polyrhythms and slinky bass grooves. The atypical arrangements seem to defy gravity, bursting like fireworks one moment and retreating inwards the next as the band blends pop, hip-hop, soul, folk, rock, 80’s house, African, and Caribbean music.

Art Event – Stamped: Letters from Rijeka

  • Location – Galway City Gallery, 15 New Dock Street, Galway,
  • Time: Daily, 15 Jul – 28 Jul
  • Cost: Free
  • Details: Rijeka – Galway’s Capital of Culture sister – is an industrial city in the western part of Croatia that many have not yet heard of. But you must have heard of Carpathia, a ship that came to Titanic’s rescue? 76 Croats were on it at the time due to Carpathia sailing towards Rijeka when the ship received the distress call. Rijeka also carries a turbulent history being a part of six different countries in just the last 100 years. Rijeka – otherwise known as the biggest Croatian port, as well as Yugoslavian at the time but also Trieste’s counterpart during the Austro-Hungarian rule – is in many ways very much similar to Galway. And at the same time, not at all. Both cities are known for strong winds and gutsy people. And we must never forget about the people.
Galway City Gallery is hosting an exhibition of Visual Art on postcards sent to us by various artists situated in Rijeka. However, this is not a one-way street, as, at the same time, a similar exhibition will be held in Rijeka. Just north of Rijeka’s main pedestrian street – much similar to Shop Street – and right next to the Archaeological Park, there is a charming café named Cukarikafe, known between locals by just Cukar (Sugar). The pastel tones and artwork on the walls signed by painter Vanja Tataj give it a romantic and recognizable look in a shabby chic style. Apart from the classic coffee, this charming place offers a wide selection of crafted beers, teas, fresh juices… But what makes Cukarikafe so special is a large variety of events, so it is not unusual to come across an exhibition, a handicraft fair, a concert or a French-themed evening. This summer, in co-operation with Galway Fringe Festival and Galway City Gallery, Cukarikafe will be presenting Visual Artwork by Galway based artists.
