  • Details: TULCA’s popular Artists’ Talk series continues for this year’s edition of TULCA Festival of Visual Arts ‘Syntonic State’ curated by Linda Shevlin. The Centre for Creative Arts & Media, GMIT will host a talk by a Syntonic State exhibiting artist every Monday for 5 weeks. Aoibheann Greenan is a Dublin-based artist working at the intersection of visual art and experimental theatre. Her interactive installation-cum-performances expose the processes by which culture and identity are evaluated in our techno-globalized era. Myth and ritual merge with pop-cultural tropes, conjuring heightened caricatures of cultures that parody the tourist gaze. By engaging in strategies that foster collaboration and audience participation, Greenan’s work seeks to destabilize ideologies of self and other that underlie our current system.

Music Event – All the Luck in the World

  • Location – Roisin Dubh, Dominic Street, Galway

  • Details: All the Luck in the World are three Irish songwriters, Neil Foot, Ben Connolly and Kelvin Barr currently based in Berlin. The band create an intimate blend of Alternative-Folk and share a collective passion for storytelling, composition and songcraft. Formed in 2011 while Foot was still in school, Connolly and Barr joined two years later to collaborate on a debut record for the band, which was written in Foot’s secluded family home in the Wicklow mountains.
    In 2013/2014 the band received first international attention due to the home-recorded “Never”, which sold more than 120.000 singles on iTunes worldwide. After signing with Barfilm and Haldern Pop Records, they released their eponymous album on January 1st 2014, and subsequently toured the record across Europe. After many distinguished festival slots and three headline club tours, they began to turn their focus to new material.

Google Sprint Event – Galway Google Design Sprint- solve Real issues for Non-profits as you learn

  • Cost: This is a free workshop bringing like-minded makers and thinkers together to collaborate on learning how to innovate and build things that matter. 1) Everyone is welcome and everyone has a role. 2) We start on time so try and arrive on time.
  • Details: (The workshop can be joined at any time, but you’ll get the most out of it by attending all 6 weeks. If you can’t attend see below for online and custom workshops). There is only one real way to learn the Design Sprint skill – by doing – so you will solve a real problem with a local non-profit using skills you already have (and they need) in a structure we provide through the Google Design Sprint’ adapted for use over 6 weeks. We’ll guide you along the way with a professional facilitator. You will learn how to define, ideate, prototype and test any idea in a rigorous, fun and proven way – through direct participation. You will learn how to build something before committing to people, time and money. Validate using the most rigorous, proven – and innovative approach available today. Not only will you be learning, but you’ll also be contributing directly to a real local cause as well as helping The Ladder reach it’s goal – helping nations reach the globally sustainable development goals by 2030 through scaling impact for local organisations and communities. By following the steps, you can then try to run your own design sprint, or with some additional training facilitate at a Ladder Community or professionally. Dance Event – Nanodance

  • Details: Explore the world of nanoscience with dance and theatre! This multimedia piece will explore the science of the very small, with performance and projection devised by visiting choreographer Deidre Cavazzi, Saddleback College. Art and science intertwine in this exciting new dance theatre piece that explores physics, technology, and wonder. Performances will take place at 6 pm on Thursday, November 15, and Friday, November 16, in the O’Donoghue Centre at NUI Galway. The Thursday performance will include a talkback session with Jessamyn and Deidre, facilitated by Marianne Ní Chinnéide of the NUI Galway Discipline of Drama and Theatre Studies.

Musical Event – The Sound of Music

  • Details: The Sound of Music is one of the world’s best-loved musicals, featuring memorable songs such as My Favourite Things and Do Re Mi, an endearing storyline set in the beautiful Austrian landscape that still enthrals’ people decades later. This musical follows the story of Maria, a young, free-spirited postulant who goes to live with the Von Trapp family and help look after the children, and ends up falling in love with the Captain with many twists and turns and the pair finally marry. The show finally culminates with the whole family singing at a concert and then fleeing from the Nazi across the mountains to Switzerland.

Galway Christmas Event – Galway Continental Christmas Market

  • Details: The Galway Continental Christmas Market makes its return to the City Of The Tribes from 6 pm on Friday 16th November until Saturday 22nd December 2018. The Galway Continental Christmas Market received over 350,000 visitors last year and there were more than 50 wooden chalets located Eyre Square along with the Santa’s Grotto, the German Bier Keller numerous other theatrical delights throughout the four week fair. The 2018 Christmas Market is the ninth year of the market in Galway and visitors can expect to enjoy a wide variety of entertainment and stalls located in Eyre Square in Galway City centre. This year will feature amusement rides including a 32 metre high Big Wheel, Helter Skelter and traditional Carousel along with live music performers, puppet shows, storytelling, school choirs, carol singing together with charity and community events will feature. Once again, Santa’s Grotto will be run by local charities and the popular Bier Keller will be playing host to various events throughout the Market’s duration. Food lovers can feast on a bratwurst, French pastries, pretzels or confectionery, crêpes and waffles, while beer lovers can sample a stein at the German Bierkeller, offering a range of traditional German beers, apple cider and mulled wine.

Movie Event – Back to Basics Tour Documentary

  • Details: Clifford Clifford Productions is a Dublin-based father-son duo that works primarily on videos with Ireland’s leading musicians and spoken word artists. The ‘Back To Basics Tour’ is their debut documentary. The ‘Back to Basics Tour’, a ground-breaking film, follows musicians Greg Clifford, Barry Jay Hughes and Ian N. Brennan on a self-booked and funded 17-date tour of Ireland. According to Dave Clifford, one half of CCP, the film captures the struggles that ensue within an unsigned music scene and the self-motivation required to persevere and survive. He said: “A film like this has never been produced before, thus giving it an edge and making it newsworthy. The tour aesthetic was one of the grassroots DIY graft, with an emphasis placed on pure, honest and stripped back acoustic performances”. The self-funded doc was quite the undertaking, including 6+ months filming, 1 TB of footage and over 500 hours of editing!

Inspired by the theme of Cereal Renaissance in Rural Europe (CERERE), Gruts Buffet will explore the culturally and historically entangled relationship between society and food, elucidating ironies, complexities, and contested narratives from distinctive heritage varieties. With their irreverent disregard for current fashions and culinary trends, The Domestic Godless will explore and experiment, challenging norms and provoking new understandings of taste, presentation, histories and cultural values of cereals combined inventively with other foods. Funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme, CERERE connects scientists with practitioners and involves farmers, food scientists, sociologists, agronomists and many others interested in heritage cereals. Led by Áine Macken-Walsh, the Irish partner in CERERE is Teagasc, Ireland’s Agriculture and Food Development Authority. A central mission of Teagasc in CERERE is to broker innovation between diverse actors in how the renaissance of Ireland’s heritage cereals is imagined and practised.

Personal Event – Inner Space: breathwork, meditation + tea ceremony

  • Location – The Secret Garden Galway, 4 William Street West, Galway

  • Cost: Inner Space: breathwork, meditation + tea ceremony workshop is 20 eur, places are limited, so pre-registration is essential.
  • Details: During this morning we will explore and deepen our understanding of our breath, and how through various breath inquiries we can deepen our connection with our minds and bodies. The first part of the workshop will finish with the practice of meditation, the art and discipline of keeping our attention and memory sharp. The second part of the workshop will be carefully and mindfully guided by Māra from The Secret Garden, Galway. She will take us through Cha Dao tea ceremony, wherein silence we will enjoy ceremonial tea and our minds’ quiet and meditative state. Cushions and blankets for the meditation and tea ceremony are provided, however, if you have your own meditation cushion or blanket, that you prefer, feel free to bring it. Please arrive 5 min prior to the start time to settle in.

Ice Skating is back!!

  • Details: Get Your Skates On! It’s time to get your skates on! Ice-skating returns to Galway with a 600 square metre REAL ICE ice rink including a specially designed kiddies ice rink fully housed in a 1200 square metre all weather marquee in the grounds of Leisureland at Salthill, Galway. That means that rain, hail or snow you and your friends will be able to skate away to your heart’s content on the biggest temporary, REAL ICE ice rink to be installed in Connacht this year.
