Film & Photography Event – NUIG 8×8 Festival 2018

  • Details: The 8×8 Festival will visit NUIG campus from Monday 22nd Oct – Friday 26th Oct this year. The film and photography festival gives NUIG students the chance to learn about global justice issues in a creative way by engaging with our outdoor photo exhibition and attending festival events such as film screenings, panel discussions and so on. With the theme for this year’s Festival being Identity & Discrimination, we’ll be looking at issues surrounding LGBT rights, women’s rights, ageism, health status, immigrant rights, ethnicity, religion and poverty. Music Event – The World Famous Harlem Gospel Choir

  • Details: Performing contemporary gospel with a touch of jazz and blues, The world famous Harlem Gospel Choir is synonymous with power vocals, glorious sound and infectious energy. For over two decades they have been America’s premier gospel choir and have toured the globe thrilling audiences with the inspirational power of black gospel music. Deeply rooted in the history of the African-American slave trade, black gospel music can be traced back to the 1700s when African slaves brought their unique African musical heritage to America and combined it with their new faith – Christianity. Out of the hardship and the trials of slavery, this unique musical tradition came to be, and forever changed music as we know it. Blues, Soul, and Rock-and-Roll…they all have origins in black gospel music. Harlem Gospel Choir presents modern gospel classics as performed in the black churches of Harlem today.

Book Event – Launch of Mary Robinson’s ‘Climate Justice’

  • Details: Former President of Ireland & UN Special Envoy on Climate Change, Mary Robinson will be at Kennys Bookshop, Galway for the launch of her new book, ‘Climate Justice – Hope, Resilience and the Fight for a Sustainable Future’ on Wednesday October 24th, and all are welcome to attend! The event will be hosted by special guest, Irish poet and novelist, John F. Deane who will interview Mary Robinson, which will be followed by an audience Q&A. Published in October 2018, Climate Justice is about both climate change and social justice and highlights how the two are linked. Robinson meets with ordinary people from communities that are already suffering from the effects of climate change and who, in battling for climate justice, are striving to enforce change and action around one of the key humanitarian issues of today. Admission to the launch is free, refreshments will be served and signed, first edition copies of the book will be available.

Charity Event – Mystery Chef in the AJLA Kitchen for Rosabel’s Rooms

  • Location – Ajla, The Bridge Centre, Galway

  • Details: AJLA restaurant, Clarinbridge welcomes a mystery chef this October in support of Rosabels Rooms. Rosabel’s Rooms, in collaboration with The Irish Hospice Foundation, was established by Suzanne McClean and Gary Monroe in memory of their beloved daughter Rosabel Monroe, who died suddenly and unexpectedly in April 2017, aged sixteen months. This project will facilitate the development of family-focused bereavement suites in hospitals around Ireland, which will provide comfort and dignity for families following the loss of a loved one. It will also facilitate therapeutic supports for any individual impacted by child loss and through our Room-to-Heal fund, Rosabel’s Rooms will facilitate direct financial support to families, when a child dies in Ireland. This will help to accommodate taking time off work, paying for funeral costs etc. “The Restaurant for Rosabel’s Rooms” on Wednesday, 24th October from 7.30pm is certain to be packed with surprise, energy and flavour. Guests will be welcomed with fizz and guided through the mystery chef four-course menu which will be accompanied by wines selected for the evening.

Creative Event – Carve ring workshop brunch

  • Location – Tribeton, 1-3 Merchant’s Road, Galway

Festival Event – Out of the Wild Sky – Macnas Parade 2018, Galway

  • Location – The parade will begin at NUIG (Aula Maxima), and take to the streets along the following route: University Rd, Salmon Weir Bridge, St Vincent’s Ave, Francis St, Eglington St, William St, Shop St, Church Yard St, Mainguard St, Bridge St, O’Brien’s Bridge, Dominick St Lower, Dominick St Upper, Crossing canal, Raven’s Terrace, Claddagh Quay.

  • Details: Out of the Wild Sky, the 2018 Macnas parade, will traverse through the streets of Galway at 5.30pm on Sunday, October 28th, 2018. Beginning at its home on the NUI Galway campus the parade will weave its way through the streets of Galway, the Macnas Halloween Parade is a highlight of Ireland’s cultural calendar. It is the largest free event in In Ireland for Halloween with over 54,000 people lining the streets every year to be awed and amazed by this epic scale of storytelling. This year’s story celebrates the act of transformation being unleashed upon the city. A world that is hypnotic and intoxicating, glittering, mysterious and filled with shadowy and noble things. Between the white fire of the stars and the whispering woods, you can hear the breath of small kingdoms rising and falling, dreams floating light as moths among the branches of the trees, where sweetness and tangibility flicker amongst the dark hug of time. Macnas bring Out of the Wild Sky to the streets of Galway, packed full of love and magic, as they sculpt a new cosmos into being, where the language of birds and the stars take flight, bells ring out stitches of lightning burst forth as a new horizon lights up the deep and the wondrous and lifts up the sky.
