Via a medley of song, movement, dance and depictions of real-life dramas, both hilarious and harrowing, Men At Play explores the performativity of male identity, through performance. Music Event – Aidan Moffat [Arab Strap] and RM Hubbert

  • Location – Roisin Dubh, 9 Dominick Street Upper, Galway
  • Time:  20:00
  • Cost: €15 (€12.50 members)
  • Details: Scottish indie–folk power duo Aidan Moffat [Arab Strap] and RM Hubbert perform tracks off their new album Here Lies The Body. “The album title has a dual meaning – sex and death.” These are common themes from Aidan Moffat; since his early days with Arab Strap, he has explored these subjects with a grace and grit that plunges deep into the human soul. But this is no re-hash of the past, rather a further leap forward. Equally multidimensional is the music contained within, weaving beautiful, spidery guitar work, haunting piano lines, lush strings, delicate percussion, fizzing 808 beats, synth pop, samba, and moments of jazz, while Moffat’s rich voice carries the narrative in rich grumbles, hushed whispers, and revealing spoken word. The album begins with first single Cockcrow and a chance encounter of two old flames as they enjoy hen and stag parties in Blackpool – the album follows their story as it moves forward (and backwards) with wit and wisdom, exploring themes of love, family, fortune telling, deceit, death, Schrodinger’s cat, the multiverse … and marshmallows.

Art Event – Stamped: Letters from Rijeka

  • Location – Galway City Gallery, 15 New Dock Street, Galway,
  • Time: Daily, 15 Jul – 28 Jul
  • Cost: Free
  • Details: Rijeka – Galway’s Capital of Culture sister – is an industrial city in the western part of Croatia that many have not yet heard of. But you must have heard of Carpathia, a ship that came to Titanic’s rescue? 76 Croats were on it at the time due to Carpathia sailing towards Rijeka when the ship received the distress call. Rijeka also carries a turbulent history being a part of six different countries in just the last 100 years. Rijeka – otherwise known as the biggest Croatian port, as well as Yugoslavian at the time but also Trieste’s counterpart during the Austro-Hungarian rule – is in many ways very much similar to Galway. And at the same time, not at all. Both cities are known for strong winds and gutsy people. And we must never forget about the people.
Galway City Gallery is hosting an exhibition of Visual Art on postcards sent to us by various artists situated in Rijeka. However, this is not a one-way street, as, at the same time, a similar exhibition will be held in Rijeka. Just north of Rijeka’s main pedestrian street – much similar to Shop Street – and right next to the Archaeological Park, there is a charming café named Cukarikafe, known between locals by just Cukar (Sugar). The pastel tones and artwork on the walls signed by painter Vanja Tataj give it a romantic and recognizable look in a shabby chic style. Apart from the classic coffee, this charming place offers a wide selection of crafted beers, teas, fresh juices… But what makes Cukarikafe so special is a large variety of events, so it is not unusual to come across an exhibition, a handicraft fair, a concert or a French-themed evening. This summer, in co-operation with Galway Fringe Festival and Galway City Gallery, Cukarikafe will be presenting Visual Artwork by Galway based artists.

A slight side note, I have gotten some DM’s on why I am not featuring some of the larger events on in Galway – if something is 100% sold out, I am not going to feature the event on these posts as I want people to find something fun to do last minute for the week ahead! There are many amazing events on each week which sell out months in advance, for example, I am going to see Jenny Greene & the RTÉ Concert Orchestra this Sunday night coming – but since it is sold out why would I feature it as it would not be easy to go last minute.

If you are hosting an event and would like to submit for possible feature on our events posts then please email the details to Hello@Floralesque.com with the subject line ‘Upcoming Galway Event’. Thanks!
