2018 Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival

28th – 30th September 2018. Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival will celebrate its 64th Birthday in September 2018 with a 3-day programme of fantastic events in the festival marquee on Nimmo’s Pier, Galway City! A three-day event celebrating oysters, seafood and our local heritage. The festival is also the proud hosts of the WORLD OYSTER OPENING CHAMPIONSHIP and has been described by the Sunday Times as “one of the 12 greatest shows on earth”. The first ‘Loving Galway’ sustainability festival

The first ‘Loving Galway’ sustainability festival will run from the 20-30th of September 2018, in celebration of the ‘Green and Blue’ spaces breathing life into Galway City. The festival is a unique collaboration and the festival builds on decades of activity by the City’s environmental community and is a legacy of Galway’s European Green Leaf designation in 2017. Theatre Event – DruidShakespeare: Richard III

Book Event – Pálás Cinema Book Club: The Little Stranger

In association with Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop, Pálás Cinema Book Club selects the best (and worst!) book to film adaptations to watch and discuss in our unique monthly book club. Each month we’ll pick a different book and film adaptation for discussion. Read the book, then join us for the film and a discussion afterwards in our bar. Great chats, great people and great fun on the last Monday of every month. Our very first book will be Sarah Waters’ The Little Stranger and on September 25th we’ll be watching Lenny Abrahamson’s brand new adaptation.

Charity Event – Mid-Autumn Festival Culture Night in aid of Western Alzheimers

  • Details: As part of a cultural exchange, the city of Shanghai-Pudong brings amazing drummers, acrobatics and dancers from the award-winning Shanghai Empireast Culture Group to Galway, Ireland on the 26th Septemeber. ”Rome wasn’t built in a day, so as the construction of traditional cultural ecology. In promoting the development of cultural industry and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries on the road, we always make a pious wader, to make sure this stick will have a positive and far-reaching impact on the development of Chinaʼs traditional culture” Mid Autumn Festival Culture Night in aid of Western Alzheimers is organised by the Irish Chinese Society Galway. Business Event – Brexit Masterclass

  • Details: The Lough Rea Hotel and Spa will host a Brexit Masterclass Breakfast with RTÉ’s Europe Editor, Tony Connelly and President of the IFA, Joe Healy on Wednesday 26 September at 7.30am. The theme of the event will focus on the impact of Brexit on the business community in Galway, both indigenous and multinational and the event will be particularly noteworthy as there is an informal leaders’ summit on Brexit next week. The broadcaster and historian, John Bowman, will moderate the event.

  • Details: Little Cinema is a short film showcase running since 2010, set up by three film-maker friends who met in college in Galway. It showcases films of all genres made by talented local film-makers of all levels from beginners to professionals. Over the 4 years it has screened over 400 films from over 170 film-makers and has provided an invaluable platform for film-makers and film-lovers to meet, network, showcase their work and simply enjoy films.

Sports Event – Cyclefordiabetes

  • Location -50 km Charity Cycle For Diabetes – Galway, Diabetes Centre, University Hospital Galway, Galway
  • Time: 09:30 – 13:30

  • Details: This is a 50km cycle starting at the Claddagh hall in Galway, going along the Wild Atlantic way to Barna, then over gentle hills to Moycullen before the final stretch back to Galway. It is aimed at raising awareness about the benefits of exercise for everyone and especially for those with Diabetes. Funds raised go to Diabetes Care West, the charity of the Diabetes centre in Galway University Hospital and will be used to support activities for young people with Diabetes.

Music Event – Philip Donnelly at The Gallery Sessions

    Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Musical Genius Philip Donnelly toured and recorded with Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, The Everly Brothers, John Prine, Emmylou Harris, and Nanci Griffith. He co-wrote the song ‘Living In These Troubled Times’ which was a Top 10 hit for Crystal Gayle. During the 1990s Donnelly returned to Ireland and continued to record with major artists and to record solo albums.

Mixing masks, folklore and fish, the Fisherwives will be silently weaving their way through the Claddagh and Spanish Arch selling their catch.
