The call of the corncrake was once a familiar sound in rural Ireland. Intensification of farming practices such as early mowing for silage have pushed these birds out to more remote unspoilt areas of Donegal, Mayo, Connemara and offshore islands. In 2018 Birdwatch Ireland estimated only 151 breeding pairs remained in Ireland.

We regulary lament the fact that we Irish will only crack it open when the sun comes out and the temperature rises – and that doesn’t happen very often. We would argue that rosé is a great wine 12 months of the year, and we have a point; rosé goes really well with a variety of foods, including warm-weather salads, but with most chicken and shellfish dishes too. So kick off your May Bank Holiday weekend with a few sips of rosé!

Cultural Event – Exhibition: Impressions By Lara Luxardi
- Location – The Mick Lally Theatre, Druid Lane, Galway
- Cost: Free
- Details: Lara designed the cover for this year’s Galway Theatre Festival. Her works will be exhibited at the Mick Lally Theatre. “I like to think of the vocabulary of the mixed techniques in my work as a metaphor for our thought process. I absolutely love the Cyanotype technique, a photosensitive iron-salt based process that allows one to create impressions of objects or negatives with a beautiful cyan-blue outcome. I find its randomness endearing, I feel that the sun, the clouds, and the time, are participants in my artwork. My cyanotypes, layered with old photographs, and mixed media illustrations, aiming to depict the way our memory works, selecting details of our experiences, and leaving shadows and undefined areas. Our perception is also imprecise, our eyes take in two-dimensional signals and our brain transforms them into a complex reality, through codes we are not fully aware of. So our memories are imprecise too, built with layers of clues and stored information, and keep changing. This uncertainty can be daunting for our survival instinct, but I believe there is poetry in it. It’s a matter of finding a subjective coherency in the raw materials. This is what I seek in my art, I feel the need to find a process, a technique, a project that feels like me, and embrace the risk of abandoning myself to it.” Lara Luxardi
